11 Photos That Will Inspire You to Visit South Water Caye

July 11, 2019

What was meant to be a snorkel tour turned out to be a day spent on South Water Caye, another Belizean paradise. The sea was rough and I was with two friends that were diving so the boat had to head to a different location than originally planned. This meant the reef was deeper and not visible from a snorkelers perspective. So I, very, willingly offered to hang on South Water Caye while they went diving.

There’s not much to do on this 15-acre island other than lounge in the sun and walk among the palms. Wi-Fi is spotty to nonexistent and service will not work here. Take the opportunity to disconnect and sip a coconut (or a Belikin). I was staying in Placencia and the hotel organized the dive/snorkel tour. Just ask your hotel in Placencia or Hopkins (another Belizean town within boating distance to South Water Caye) and they’ll coordinate it all with a reputable dive company.

However, if you have a couple of days- there are two hotels on the island. Pelican Beach and Blue Marlin Beach Resort are down to earth hotels occupying opposite ends of the 15-acre island. These are no-frills island style hotels and each offers the basic amenities you’d find at any other hotel (hello AC and WiFi) along with offshore snorkeling, scuba diving, island hopping boat tours, island tours or kayaking.

Regardless of what you choose to do with your time on South Water Caye, be it a day trip or an overnight stay, it is sure to be beautiful.

Have you booked your flight to Belize yet? I sure hope so! In case you missed it, don’t forget to check out my full itinerary to my beloved Caye Caulker and my quick guide to another beautiful island in Belize, Ranguana Caye!
